"american culture

While living in
Milwaukee, I worked as a bartender for about 9 months. That is a job
I’ll
never forget. The thing I found the most fascinating was just observing
people
and the whole culture of drinking, binge drinking, and the effect it
has
on them. It was a "sobering experience" to say the least. It became
quite
sad to serve the regulars; watch young drinkers start an addiction, or
watch
old drinkers plow themselves to oblivion. And me, as the enabler-it was
strange,
and depressing. Closing time was obviously the worst. Besides the
fact
that the patrons had no respect for the bar (it was completely trashed-
cigarette
butts, broken bottles, puke, to name a just a few...), no one wanted to
leave.
And I became the enemy- kicking people out. "Just one more drink!"
"Come
on, pleeeaaassseeeeee...” And even after everyone was gone, and the bar
was
clean, it seemed all for not. Because they were all back the next night
repeating
the same exact thing. Thank you loyal patrons!

their selfish cravings, their sorrows fall away from them, like
drops of water from a lotus flower." (Dhammapada, 336)
